Vision for Languages- French
At Heygarth Primary School, we envision that our children will develop their language learning skills and become all-round global citizens.
We will prepare our children by developing an awareness of cultural differences, to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language. We aim to teach through the three pillars of language (vocabulary, grammar and phonics). With this approach, children will gain confidence in communicating in a foreign language.
We teach French as our chosen foreign language in order to prepare children for life in modern Britain, in which work and activities increasingly involve communicating in many different languages.
Languages - Rationale
At Heygarth, we have chosen to follow the iLanguages Curriculum for French. This is a scheme with a strong phonics focus and support for non-specialists with sound files and video clips to aid pronunciation. Further to this, the scheme uses a Kagan based methodology (which allows children to ‘learn by doing’ with engaging activities that incorporate all learning styles while being active in their education) as well as Talk4writing methods which work together to enhance pupil engagement and learning, including SEN pupils. The scheme teaches French using the three pillars of language (phonics, vocabulary and grammar), while being a spiral curriculum.
